Christmas Trees are often the centerpiece of our holiday decorating: they set the tone of the display whether it is intricate and detailed, or full of colour and whimsy. Decorating it can seem overwhelming, especially when there is a specific look you desire but we have come up with these easy steps to follow to ensure your tree looks just the way you pictured.
Step 1: Consider where you are placing your tree. Ideally it will be in an area of low traffic, and also one away from heat sources which can cause problems for both artificial and live trees. Trees can be placed near a window so those passing by can enjoy it as well, but be sure not to block the light out the room it is in. If you are able to place your tree in a spot which can be seen from multiple areas of your home you will find it even more enjoyable. Finally decide on the size of the tree you would like: if you have raised or cathedral ceilings you may want to invest in a larger tree, most rooms do well with a tree between 6 and 8 feet.
Step 2: Choose your tree! This may seem like the easy part but many people have a hard time deciding whether to purchase a live tree or invest in an artificial tree. Both types of trees have pros and cons and you will have to decide which is best for your family. See our handy chart if you are having a hard time deciding.
Step 3: Add lights! This may seem like the easy part but with so many different types of lights available you may find yourself stumped. For most people there are generally two things to focus on, colour and use. Decide whether you would like soft white lighting or cheery multicoloured lights. Then consider function: many lights now come with timers, various mode selections, and power sources. If these are important to you compare a few different types to see what is best for you. A quick tip on lights: don’t skimp! Use a strand of 100 lights for every vertical foot of tree. Our personal favourite are these easy to hang lights from 1-2-glow!
Step 4: Use ribbon or Sinamay. While many people shy away from ribbon and Sinamay, it is easily one of the best ways to give your tree a full look, while also adding colour and texture. It is also an easy and cost effective way to change your colour scheme from year to year without having to purchase an entire new set of decorations. A good tip with ribbon and Sinamay is to start at the top and work down, and don’t be afraid to try it on an angle or even vertically. Watch this video for more great ways to use Sinamay:
Step 5: Hang Ornaments. To showcase your favorites, place them in prime positions on the tree first. Next, hang your larger ornaments, spacing them out evenly around the tree. Fill in around those ornaments with medium- and small-size ones. Be sure to hang some ornaments closer to the trunk to create depth and interest. Consider using some non-traditional items for a unique look: add lanterns with battery operated candles, large feathers as a tree topper, or sprays of silk flowers for big bursts of colour.
Now sit back, relax, and enjoy the glow of the twinkling lights!
